Six days alone on a ridge trail. Three empty warrens, doors standing open. A trade-cart overturned in a ravine, cargo untouched, oxen gone. That is how The Price of Passage begins. Desrael is twenty-two. Lilly is on a river barge with her tail wrapped around her ankles, deciding the current looks like a large fish that has been persuaded to lie flat. This is a prelude novella to The Burrow and the Blade. Every piece of art is hand-drawn by Alicia Short. John Pearce edited the text. Both are members of the Merris Guard. Now I want your eyes on it. The art is pen and ink right now. Would you leave it that way, or do you want to see it in color? If color, which scene first? Look at the chapter openers too. Each one has a river vignette, an epigraph from Vaelora itself, and a drop cap. Which part pulls you in? What would you change? Be blunt. I would rather hear it now than after it prints.
